The history of Uncle Hilde’s traces back to 1896, when Mark “Hilde” Hildebrand’s grandfather started a lumber business in Pennsylvania. As a third generation lumberman, Hilde moved to New Hampshire shortly after graduating from forestry school in 1985 and went to work for one of the largest specialty lumber wholesalers in the Northeast. It was there that he spent over 20 years in sales and purchasing while developing strong ties with lumber manufacturers and distributors from New England to Vancouver to China and South America.
In 2006 he left the wholesale business and with the support of his old suppliers opened Uncle Hilde’s Lumber Outlet in Tilton NH, a retailer of high quality, deeply discounted specialty lumber building materials. Despite the great recession Uncle Hilde’s was a big success and expanded to include three stores across the state. In 2016, with mixed emotions, Hilde decided to accept an offer from another retailer to purchase all of the company’s assets. But not the business itself.
Now located in Moultonborough, Uncle Hilde’s warehouse can be found on Route 25 only minutes from Mark’s home. The product line is focused primarily on prefinished solid hardwood flooring and cedar shingles. Uncle Hilde’s also stocks exterior decking products such as imported hardwood, western red cedar, and composite/PVC. We are very thankful for the strong support we continue to receive from our long time suppliers, customers and dear friends.
